Swim programs

With the city’s new aquatics complex only nine months away, Morgan Hill’s swim club, the Makos, are currently expanding four of the team’s programs. The Makos have represented the community of Morgan Hill in USA swimming for over forty-one years. Their head coach is Edward Toately, who has thirty years of experience coaching swimming and water polo. The team was recently named a USA Swimming Bronze Medal Team for the upcoming 2003-2004 season.

Children ages 4 and up are welcome to enroll in the team’s fall learn to swim/swim lessons program. Sessions are held in the Britton Middle School instructional pool on weekdays beginning at approximately 5 p.m. starting Sept. 10 with several different package options available.

Children ages 5 and up are invited to tryout for the Mako age group program. Tryouts are held Monday through Friday at the Britton Middle School pool at 5:30 p.m. starting Sept. 10. The cost ranges from $60 to $85 per month depending upon placement, and annual insurance is required.

The adult masters program is open to any individual age 19 and up. Swim sessions are held Monday through Friday at the new Live Oak High School pool starting at 5:15 a.m. The cost is $45 per month, or $5 per swim. Annual insurance is required.

Finally, adult masters water polo scrimmages are held at 9 a.m. Saturday mornings at the new Live Oak High School pool. The El Toro Brewing Company sponsors the team, which also hosts games and travels to compete against other teams. The daily fee is $5 and annual insurance is required.

Fall basketball

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall SCBA Basketball program. Games and practices are held on Saturdays only from Sept. 6 through Nov. 1. Applications can be picked at all Morgan Hill unified Schools, www.scbabasketball.org or by calling 408 460-7402.

Boosters golf tournament

The Live Oak High School Athletic Boosters Club will be presenting its first annual Golf Classic this fall.

Scheduled for Friday, October 3, the tournament will be played at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course and Country Club in Gilroy.

It will have an 11 a.m. shotgun start, and the Boosters are planning to accommodate 144 golfers for the event.

Included with the round of golf are the use of a golf cart and complimentary beverages on the course. “Tee prizes” will be available, with South County Chevrolet presenting a new car for the “Hole in One” contest.

There will be a buffet breakfast before the tournament, and a buffet dinner along with “silent auction” and raffle afterwards. Fees for the day will be $175 per golfer.

The Boosters Club is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote, assist and support the athletic programs at Live Oak High School.

With the continued budget woes both throughout the state and particularly within the local school district, the boosters are stepping up their efforts this year to help defray more of the costs of the sports programs at Live Oak.

Thrive on throwing

The nationally recognized off season arm strengthening program used by professional baseball players will be held Sept. 15 to Nov. 17 and will be limited to 12 students per each class. There are two different classes for under 12, a class for 13 + and a high school class. The program is designed to strengthen the arm by using arm circles, j-band surgical tubing and long toss. The class meets three times a week for an hour and a half and lasts eight weeks. The cost is $295 for the 36 hours of instruction. Details: 782-0630, [email protected] or www.jaegersports.com.

Rotary club golf tournament

Mark Friday, Oct. 3 on your calendar now to play in the Morgan Hill Rotary Club’s 10th Annual Oktoberfest Golf Tournament at beautiful San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament are used for projects that benefit the community of Morgan Hill, including ten scholarships awarded to local high school seniors. Golf fundraiser

Mitch Juricich, of Hooked on Golf, and Roy Holt the No. 1 Class B visually impaired golfer in the United States, will host the second annual ABDGA fundraising golf tournament Sept. 12 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course.

The four-man scramble competition – which has a $195 entry fee that includes green fees, golf cart, lunch, dinner, cocktails, auction, raffle, and music – will have a noon shotgun start. There will be simulation holes for golfers to feel what it is like to tee-off with various disabilities.

In addition, there will be a clinic that day for adults and children with disabilities using adaptive equipment as well as a lunch.

Senior legal golf tournament

The Senior Adults Legal Assistance charity is having its second annual charity golf tournament. Monday, Oct. 6 at the Stanford University Golf Course. Each year, SALA provides free legal services to more than 2,000 persons who are age 60 or older, most of whom are very low income. SALA’s legal services protect the right of elders, ensuring their access to public benefit programs, promoting their safety and independence, preventing their premature institutionalization, and helping them plan for the future. Night golf

Gilroy Golf Course will once again be kicking off its summer junior golf schedule with their second annual ‘Midnight Madness Nightlite Golf Tournament’.

The tournament is open to junior golfers from ages 10-17 and will be held at Gilroy Golf Course in September.

The event is played in the dark with glow in the dark golf balls. The festivities start at 7:30 p.m. with a putting tournament followed by a hamburger bbq at 8 p.m.

The six-hole tournament will start approximately 8:30 p.m. and end by 11 p.m. Entry for the event is $30 which includes golf, dinner, glow in the dark ball and prizes. Details: 848-0490.

Swim lessons

El Toro Aquatics offers 30 or 60-minute sessions offered Mon/Wed or Tue/Thur at Live Oak beginning at 5 or 5:30 p.m.

El Toro offers days and times to fit the schedule of active families. SwimAmerica Morgan Hill learn-to-swim is now accepting spring session registration for classes offered at the Britton Pool from 3:30-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Lessons are 25 minutes offered every half hour from 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and 5 – 6:30 p.m. Technique-oriented, goal-driven, the SwimAmerica teaching system is perfect for all children 3 and older, group or private.

Eagle Ridge Golf Course is selling its Players Club card that cost $149 –which will give you a discount on all your green fees every time you play until March 2004 (around a 30 percent savings on all green fees).
