’ softball team ended its summer season with a bang, winning the
12-team End of Summer Softball Celebration Tournament last weekend
in Modesto. The Gilroy Stanford Cardinal, which includes players
from Morgan Hill, went undefeated, outscoring its opponents 44-6 in
its six-game championship run. Le
ading the way was ace left-handed pitcher Ashley Harrington, who
won five of the six games, including two by shutout and struck out
24 batters over the two days. Sara Sendejas picked up the other
victory, also pitching a shutout. The tournament championship was
especially noteworthy in that the Gilr
oy Stanford Cardinal beat Oakdale TNT twice. The Oakdale team
had been in the championship finals in four of the eight
tournaments they played this summer, and sported four players over
6-feet tall. In the championship game, the local team edged Oakdale
TNT 3-2, scoring the decisive run in the botto

Speedy centerfielder Kaitlin Muraoka led off the final at-bat with a line drive double to right field. Muraoka was bunted to third by Harrington, and scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice by shortstop Kristy Pineda. Pineda led the Gilroy Stanford Cardinal in hitting during the tournament with a .600 average. Catcher Julie Wallace was close behind at .545, with Muraoka batting .400 and Harrington chipping in at a .333 clip. Also contributing were: Mandy Lafuente, Ashley Hernandez, Liz Wallace, Jessica Clancy, Ally McClintic and Sendejas. The locals batted .300 as a team during the tournament. The garlic city girls started the tournament off by winning three games on Saturday and capturing the first-place seeding in their division by outscoring opponents 27-3. The Gilroy Stanford Cardinal debuted with a 4-3 win over Oakdale TNT. They followed with a 14-0 whitewashing of the Empire Xtreme, and a 10-0 blanking of the Hughson Rebels. On championship Sunday, the locals blanked the Fallon Nevada Rockets 8-0 and beat the Milpitas Renegades 5-1 before their 3-2 championship game victory over Oakdale TNT.

The Gilroy Stanford Cardinal is managed by Joe Hernandez and coached by Aurelio Sendejas, Gary Wallace and Dennis Castro. MH Pony Baseball Winterball registration

Morgan Hill Pony Baseball’s Winterball registration will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 20 from noon to 2pm, and Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, at Mountain Mike’s Pizza in Tennant Station on Monterey Road in Morgan Hill.

Join the annual Live Oak Sports Camps for the final week of summer. Next week’s camps, which range in cost from $90-$150, start Monday. Signups are being accepted at the Live Oak gym.

OVYSL fall soccer accepting signups

Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League is now taking sign-ups for the 2005-06 fall recreational season.

Play begins Sept. 10 and ends Nov. 20. Boys and girls ages 4-16 are eligible (birth dates 8/1/1989 to 7/31/2001). Fees range from $65 for U6, $95 for U8 and $120 for U10-U16.

Applications must be postmarked on or before July 15 or a $25 late fee will be assessed. Teams are filled on a space-available-only basis after July 15.

Sobrato sports camps

In its final week of the summer, the Sobrato High Athletics Camps will be held at the Sobrato campus with its brand new athletic facilities. Featured are the Got Game Camp, a three-hour, 3-on-3, half-court basketball extravaganza, and the Baseball skills and fundamentals camp. The camps are designed for kids aged 6-17, and costs range from $75-$140. Signups are being accepted now.

YMCA Camps signups

Mt. Madonna YMCA in Morgan Hill is now accepting registration for camps which take place at the Morgan Hill YMCA, 17666 Crest Ave.

Half-day sports camps are for 3-5 year olds and take place through Aug. 19. The cost is $133/week.

Full day sports camps include a Y-World of Sports from Aug. 15-19 at $223/week; and golf camp from Aug. 8-12 at $350/week.

These camps are only for those entering grades 1-3 or 4-6.

San Jose State offers basketball camp

The coaching staff of San Jose States University’s Men’s Basketball Program will be holding a four-day camp this month.

The session runs from August 8-11 (Monday-Thursday). We offer early drop off that starts at 7:45am and late pick-up until 5:30pm at no additional cost.

Please note that camp runs from 9am-4pm. The cost of the camp is $170.

Camp staff will include the SJSU men’s basketball coaching staff, players, as well as other area coaches. The camp emphasis will be on fun as well as basketball fundamentals, skill enhancement, and team building.
