Cheerleading more like dance – but it’s not a sport

Dear Editor,

Both my sister and I were cheerleaders – three years for me and four years for my sister. We discussed this issue over the weekend and we both agreed that cheerleading is not a sport.

It is a performing art. It does require strength, stamina, and a lot of hard work, but I don’t think anyone is disputing that. And yes, you can be in competitive cheerleading, but these things, in and of themselves, do not make cheerleading a sport.

You can compare it to dance in that they both require physical fitness and plenty of practice, and they can both be competitive. But most would agree that dance is not a sport. So why would cheerleading be? Granted they are not the same, and I do not mean to call cheerleaders dancers or dancers cheerleaders, but I think both can be placed in the category of performing arts. That’s my two and a half cents.
