The Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce slightly altered their procedure for choosing the 2006 Salute Morgan Hill winners.
Though a random sample of community representatives were still used, previous honorees were also consulted in this year’s selection to keep them involved in the legacy.
The six winners of last year joined a panel of five community members to make the selection. They met together to discuss about 30 nominations for woman of year and 15 applications for man of the year.
They did receive a few duplicate nominations for both man and woman of the year. But the quantity didn’t affect the outcome.
“It is the extent of their service that is deciding factor not the number of votes,” said Chamber Special Events Director Michele Naylor.
As a group, they discussed each nomination. Each jury member rated the applicant by preference, and then the winners were chosen from the number of points each received.
Laura Brunton, who was the chairperson for the meeting, was there in case of a tie, but did not vote.
“There is always one that comes to the top, but never a tie,” Brunton said.
“Morgan Hill is very fortunate to have people in the community of the caliber as those two,” Naylor said about the selections for man and woman of the year.
The Awards program began in 1958, honoring citizen of the year Richard Weichert.
The 2006 Salute Morgan Hill Awards and Installation Ceremonies will be held Saturday, January 28, beginning at 6pm, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. For information, please contact Special Events Director Michele Naylor at 779-9444 or
