The Learning and Loving Education Center in Morgan Hill has received a $3,065 grant from ProLiteracy Worldwide through its National Book Scholarship Fund (NBSF).

The Learning and Loving Education Center is a grassroots literacy program that began serving low-income immigrant women and their children in 1994. The program is specifically designed to empower underserved, isolated women by offering a comprehensive daytime program for adult learners with on-site childcare/preschool for their children. While mothers are learning English-as-a-second-language (ESL), literacy, computer skills, adult basic education, parenting, health, etc., their children are also learning pre-literacy, preschool skills, and English.

The NBSF is providing the Center with vitally needed textbooks and dictionaries for ESL classes. The NBSF is also providing family literacy materials that will be used during the program’s parenting series.

“The books from the National Book Scholarship Fund will strengthen our parenting series and help us build a more structured lesson plan and learning curriculum. With these books our program can better meet the needs of students,” said Sister Pat Davis, the program’s executive director.

“The NBSF has also made it possible for all students to have their own picture dictionary for classroom and home use. This is the second grant we have received through the NBSF. Our Center has now received over $3,400 in books and materials from ProLiteracy Worldwide to help support our literacy work.”

Since its inception in 1995, the National Book Scholarship Fund has distributed over $1.7 million worth of New Readers Press books and educational materials to more than 800 qualified literacy providers around the country. Last year, $189,259 in NBSF grants was awarded to 91 programs. NBSF grants are made possible through donations from foundations, institutions, and individuals nationwide.

This year’s award to The Learning and Loving Education Center is ProLiteracy Worldwide’s 64th grant to a literacy program in California, bringing the state’s total to $151,919 in NBSF scholarships over the last nine years.

NBSF grants are given to family literacy programs that work to improve the literacy skills of parents and their children. Grant are also awarded to English-as-a second-language projects (ESL), adult basic educational programs, and projects that involve women-focused basic literacy or ESL programming. To qualify for a grant, programs must obtain funding for up to 20 percent of the amount requested, specify the need and proposed use for the materials, and agree to provide a follow-up written report.
