Original artwork is still being accepted for the Centennial Morgan Hill Fine Art Poster Competition and Open Juried Show. The theme of the poster competition should be on the city of Morgan Hill, while entries for the open show can reflect any design.

“We’d like to encourage all local artists to participate in the show and the poster competition, and that’s why we have an open theme for the juried show and those who want to submit entries just for the Morgan Hill centennial poster competition may do so also,” said Steve Soult, who owns Gallery Morgan Hill, where all art work will be displayed and judged.

The winner of the Fine Art Poster Competition will have the artwork featured within the city during the community’s 2006 centennial year.

“The posters for this competition should be of Morgan Hill in the past or in the present,” said Yarka Kennent, Centennial Morgan Hill Committee member.

Additionally, Kennent wants to kill a rumor that the committee will only accept designs reflecting Morgan Hill’s past. She said, “This is not so. We will accept all posters about Morgan Hill.”

All artists are invited to participate in both events. The entries will be displayed at Gallery Morgan Hill, 17490 South Monterey Road, during the month of September.

Entries for the poster competition will be judged by a “People’s Choice” balloting process, said Kennent. People may select their favorite at Gallery Morgan Hill beginning Thursday, Sept. 8 up until the Taste of Morgan Hill, Sept. 24 and 25. The top five favorites will receive prizes. The top award has a cash prize of $200 for the winner. In addition, the winning entry will be featured as the Morgan Hill Centennial Poster and displayed within the city throughout next year. An option will also be provided by the city to purchase the artwork for public auction. Proceeds of the auction will be used to benefit the community.

The open juried show will be hosted by Gallery Morgan Hill also. All media will be accepted. Judging for the open show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 4. Cash awards for the juried competition are $100, first place; $75, second place; $50, third place, and $25, fourth place. The open juried show will be judged by Kennent, who is also an artist and designer; Lola Chardon, a Gallery Morgan Hill artist; and Tim Lantz, a local professional artist.

Details and entry forms for both events are available at Gallery Morgan Hill or online at www.gallerymorganhill.org. Deadline for the reduced entry fee of $12 is Aug. 31. After, the entry fee will cost $15.

Art work for the show and competition will be accepted Sept. 2 and 3, from 11am to 5pm at Gallery Morgan Hill. For more information or questions, call 776-7990.
