They, and several other Live Oak High athletes, will get their chance to qualify for the section finals at today’s CCS semifinals at San Jose City College.
In addition, Sobrato High freshman Ashley Grose, who competed in the league varsity finals on a whim last weekend, qualified for CCS in both the 100 and 200. Grose took second in both events at the league finals.
Jones (800, 4X400 relay), Powell (110 hurdles) and Wong (1,600, 3,200) are the odds-on favorites to make the CCS finals in their events. The top nine finishers advance to Friday’s finals at Los Gatos High.
Last year, Jones made the state finals in the 800, while Powell just missed going to state, finishing fourth overall in the 110 hurdles. Powell is battling a shoulder injury suffered on Monday. The top three finishers, and those who reach qualifying standards, advance to the state finals June 3-4.
