MORGAN HILL — Brent Carman has another new world bus-driving title to compete for.

The Morgan Hill Unified School District driver will be out to win a fifth championship next month, when the National School Transportation Association’s International Safety Competition makes its 39th annual running in Greensboro, N.C.

Known affectionately as “bus roadeos,” these events test drivers’ basic safety skills in several events.

Fresh off winning his first world title in the small bus division in last year’s roadeo, Carman is set to compete in conventional bus July 18-19.

“The competition will be even more difficult,” Carman, who also won transit bus titles in 2000, 2002 and 2003, said Friday. “Every state except California uses conventional buses commonly. I have to drive to another lot just to practice.”

Carman qualified for the international competition by placing first in conventional bus at state finals Memorial Day weekend.

He is making his first trip to the roadeo in this division.

“For me, this is the biggest one of them all,” Carman said. “All the best drivers do conventional. I won’t say what my goal is, but you can probably guess.”
