A pair of local sisters plans to raffle off thousands of dollars in donated vacation packages, salon services, jewelry and more to raise money for “the trip of a lifetime” with their older sister as she battles endometrial cancer.
In a “Thelma & Louise” adventure for the history books, sisters Susan Hamilton of Gilroy, Gwen Reid of Morgan Hill and Sherrie Adams of St. Peters, Mo., plan to pack up and ship out next week for a 10-day road trip from Gilroy to Missouri.
Receiving the news that she had stage four endometrial cancer was a wake-up call for Adams and a reminder of the importance of the loved ones in her life. Too weak from the chemotherapy to continue working, and with medical bills mounting, the bonding experience she hoped to share with her sisters appeared to be out of reach.
Unwilling to let a lack of funds hamper their hopes, Hamilton and Reid plan to host a weekend fundraiser to help their older sister cover medical costs and kick off their adventure.
Complete with door prizes every 15 minutes, the event started off with a few family friends donating raffle prizes for a good cause. Through social networking websites, the cause quickly caught fire and donations are flooding in from as far away as North Carolina, Hamilton said.
The headlining raffle prize is a a seven-night stay at a timeshare on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Other prizes include four rounds of golf at Eagle Ridge, beauty baskets, jewelry, swim lessons and gift certificates for local fashions, beauty products and salon services. Raffle tickets will cost a $1.
“It’s incredible,” said Adams, who is in Gilroy this week gearing up for the road trip. “What’s more incredible is that I don’t even know some of these people.”
With the outpouring of support they’ve received, Adams said she expects a “wall-to-wall” crowd at her sister’s house for the raffle.
Hamilton and Reid hope to follow up with a fashion show to raise money for their sister later this year.
