The Caltrain board will hold a public hearing Thursday to discuss proposed changes to the fare structure and the proposal to move Caltrain to a proof-of-payment system.

The public hearing comes after a nine-month fare study and three public meetings.

Many of the improvements are based on recommendations taken from passenger focus groups hosted by the rail agency and are intended to establish an appropriate base fare and incremental zone charge to achieve revenue neutrality.

The proposals respond to significant growth over the last several years and would promote fare equity by reducing the fare structure from nine zones of various lengths to six equal zones.

Proposals include:

• Ticket validity periods and types would change.

• One-way tickets would be valid for three hours, for example.

• A day pass would replace round-trip tickets.

• Use of ticket validators would be required with 10-ride tickets.

• Expanding the youth discount to riders 5-17, currently the youth discount on most fare media is offered to children 5-11.

For additional information on the proposed changes go to www.caltrain.com or call customer service at 1.800.660.4287 or (TDD) 650.508.6448.

Anyone who would like to comment on the changes but can not attend the hearing can do so by calling 1.800.660.4287, by e-mailing to fa***@******in.com, or by sending postal mail to Caltrain Board Secretary, 1250 San Carlos Ave., San Carlos, CA, 94070.
