– Try outs for the 2011-2012 cheer season are Wednesday at Live Oak High School. Due to scheduling challenges, try outs will be in the wrestling room. Cheer applications are available in the school lobby, attendance and the ASB offices, and at both middle schools and the charter school.

Strategies for student success
– Clay Roberts, an author and the founder of a national education consulting firm, is speaking at Live Oak High School Theater 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The free event, “What young people need to succeed,” will identify practical strategies for parents, schools and communities for raising healthy, successful young people.

– A presentation by Mount Madonna School’s seniors about their recent experiences in India is scheduled for Friday. PCAG meets Friday
– The Perchlorate Community Advisory Group will hold its quarterly meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, at the San Martin Lions Club, 12415 Murphy Ave. The public is encouraged to come and learn about the progress addressing the perchlorate plume, bottled water deliveries and what is happening at the state and national level regarding perchlorate.
Help make the city beautiful
– Help Morgan Hill become even more beautiful by trimming shrubs, planting flowers, picking up litter and painting, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Meet at City Hall, 17575 Peak Ave. This event will conclude with a celebratory barbecue lunch.

Pirate-themed fundraiser
– Morgan’s Cove in Morgan Hill will host a pirate-themed fundraiser for the Sobrato High School girls basketball team Sunday. The event will include a pre-party where guests are encouraged to come in pirate attire, a viewing of the new Johnny Depp movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” at Morgan Hill’s CineLux theater, and a special pirate dinner following the movie provided by Huntington Station and cooked by “Captain Poppy.”

Pet wash benefits animals
– Cherisse’s Hair Salon and the Morgan Hill Chapter of The Women’s Networking Alliance will conduct a pet wash from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, at the depot parking lot. The proceeds will benefit Air for Paws of Morgan Hill and Saint Francis of Assisi Spay and Vaccination Clinic of San Martin.

Flower lovers meet
