Learn about budget at open house

– Taxpayers and residents of Morgan Hill are invited to an open house Thursday to learn all about the city budget – how it is funded, what services might have to be cut this year and why, and what City Hall’s top priorities are.

City staff leading the open house session will present and discuss their recommendations for the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. The meeting is an effort to educate and inform the public prior to the first public hearing on the budget, which is scheduled for June 1.

The open house will take place 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. Those interested may stop by any time during the open house to talk to city staff, view proposals and ask questions.

Meet author of ‘God’s Invitation’

– Meet Thomas Flowers and hear him talk about his book “God’s Invitation,” a series of meditations on the Bible that connects Old Testament and New Testament stories to lives today through reflections and poems. Flowers, a member of the Jesuits, a catholic religious order, is studying philosophy and history at St. Louis University as part of his training to become a priest. The discussion takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St.

Meet conservative Republicans, others

– Conservative Republicans and concerned citizens are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill California Republican Assembly at 7 p.m. Thursday. Meet at 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin (west of the airport). The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and the country.

Take adventure hike

– Join volunteer Don Savant on a two-hour adventure hike to discover the wonders of Henry W. Coe Park. Hike starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. Bring lunch and water. All ages are welcome.

Jr. Rangers program

– An hour long interactive program for kids ages 7 to 12 at 2 p.m. Saturday will focus on Henry Coe State Park’s natural and cultural resources. Topics include animals of the park, geology, mapping and orientation, and more. Meet outside the visitor center.

Flower lovers meet

– The Morgan Hill Flower Lover’s Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday June 1, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. This will be the last meeting before summer break and will commence again in September. 

Find a good used book or two

– The Friends of the Library Book Sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Morgan Hill Library, 660 W Main Ave. All books are $1 or less, and only $3 per bag for the last hour of the sale. Children’s books are .10 to .25 cents each. Books of all types will be included: fiction, non-fiction (many business titles), old and rare, hardcover and paper. The Members-Only Preview will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, before the sale opens to the public. Memberships ($10) may be purchased at the door. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading. Teachers and nonprofits may take books for free at the end of the sale.
