Pars for Bowe
A 9-hole benefit golf tournament for Brian Bowe, the executive director of the Gilroy Garlic Festival who is battling carcinoid cancer, is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 at the Gilroy Golf Course. Bowe needs a series of treatments that are not covered by insurance and the golf tournament will directly aid him with medical costs. The goal is to earn $15,000 to wipe out the financial burden of one of the needed treatments. The $100 donation for the tournament includes beverages on the course and wine with the delicious barbecue ribs dinner planned by local celebrity chef Sam Bozzo. Separate dinner tickets are available for $25 – all are invited – and various sponsorship opportunities exist. A brief auction of select items, hosted by former Mayor Don Gage, will be held as dinner winds down.

International Coin Collectors Association to host special event in Morgan Hill
Currently on a global tour, the International Coin Collectors Association (ICCA) will be making a stop in Morgan Hill at the Ramada, located at 16115 Condit Road, on Tuesday through Saturday. The show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The ICCA will be purchasing coins, paper currency, gold and silver on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries. This special event is free and open to the public.
ICCA spokesman Mark Cooper says, “We hope to spend at least $250,000 while we are in town, purchasing people’s old coin collections, vintage bank notes and scrap gold and silver. It’s been all over the news – gold and silver are trading at record highs – and people everywhere are scrambling to cash in. We buy a lot of class rings, mismatched earrings and broken necklaces. Just a small handful of gold can add up to hundreds of dollars very quickly.” Cooper continues, “Old coins are also very valuable. An ultra-rare 1894 S Barber dime sold for a whopping $1.9 million in 2007. We recently paid $120,000 for a coin collection in NC and even $300 for a single penny in GA. I encourage everyone to clean out their drawers, lock boxes, jewelry boxes and bring their items to our show for a free evaluation and perhaps walk out a little richer!”
Traveling from small towns to large cities, the ICCA hosts hundreds of events each year where local residents are encouraged to bring in their precious metals, old coins and paper money to earn extra cash. While meeting one-on-one with each guest, the ICCA specialists review, research and evaluate the items and will make an offer to purchase all gold coins, silver coins made before 1965 and paper money printed prior to 1934. The amount of the offer depends on the silver or gold content, the collectability, the rarity and the condition of the items. If the guest decides to accept the offer made, a check will be issued on the spot.
Parent company of the ICCA, THR & Associates is the largest and most-successful company of its kind in the world. On the leading edge of the precious metals, antiquities and collectibles industries, THR & Associates is headquartered in Springfield, Ill. with bases in Canada and Europe.
