Morgan Hill – For the second-year in a row, Specialized Bicycles Component is the winner of the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce’s Sustainable Quality Award.
Comcast’s Morgan Hill call center and St. Catherine Parish and School are winners of Excellence awards for their stewardship of the natural environment and social responsibility.
Also, People and Planet and South County Housing will receive an Excellence Award for their stewardship to the natural environment.
The chamber will honor the winners at the city’s Earth Day celebration at 2pm Sunday at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center.
Specialized has 200 employees in Morgan Hill and offers all of them $2 a day to carpool, ride bikes, take public transit or walk to work. The company, which sells bikes and gear for riders, also has a recycling program for used bike tires that are turned into floor mats.
“We’re flattered to have received the award two years in a row,” said Ariadne Delon Scott, director of advocacy and environment for Specialized Bicycles. “We feel as a bicycle company we have an ideal solution to address climate change and that’s two-wheel transit. It’s clean and it’s green.”
The chamber launched the Sustainable Quality Awards program in 2006 to honor local businesses and organizations that engage in practices that demonstrate their stewardship to the natural environment, social responsibility and economic sustainability.
“The actions of these future-thinking and extraordinary businesses and organizations sustain our high quality of life,” said Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce CEO Dan Ehrler in a written statement. “The chamber wishes to honor these leaders and encourage others via the Sustainable Quality awards.”
A second awards presentation will be held at the Morgan Hill City Council meeting at 7pm, May 2 at City Hall.
