Morgan Hill police were busy Thursday, handling a string of burglaries in the city center.
Seven businesses, including The Morgan Hill Times, were burglarized Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, possibly by the same group of juveniles, according to MH Police Lt. Joe Sampson.
Besides The Times, Taco Bell, Accutune, Trail Dust, the barber shop in Albertson’s Center, Elegant Stone on Mast Avenue and Enterprise Car Rental were hit.
At The Times and at Accutune the burglars broke and went through windows smaller than an adult burglar could normally pass, Sampson said. A cardboard trash can from the weekend’s Taste of Morgan Hill was used to climb into the Times building.
“They took loose cash from some of the cash registers and drawers, tried to break into a Coke machine – all signs of juvenile burglars,” Sampson said.
The burglars also took two SiPix 3300 digital cameras that The Times loans to members of the public, etched #1 and #2 on the bottom, plus a professional grade Nikon CoolPix 995 digital camera without a lenscap, moving the crime from petty theft into something carrying a longer sentence if the suspects are caught and convicted.
Someone saw two teenagers on the roof of the Taco Bell on Monterey Road near midnight, he said.
Sampson said the department is putting together a strategy to deal with “this little group.”
“About the same time last year we had a rash of burglaries downtown,” Sampson said, “and we arrested a couple of juveniles and sent them to Juvenile Hall.”
Sampson said they were checking to see if they are still there.
