First official season for Sobrato swimming team
Morgan Hill – At the helm of the Sobrato Bulldogs swim team in its inaugural varsity season is two-time Olympian Lynn Gautschi.
Gautschi, a silver and bronze medalist, has been coaching swimming for 36 years and is excited about building a program at Sobrato.
“This is an incredible bunch of kids,” said Gautschi. “We have kids that have never swam before and they are energetic and bring a great mentality. When I get to the pool for workouts, they already have the covers off and are ready to go.”
Gautschi expects Caitlin Smith, Taylor Wndgassen, Alissa Davi and Allison Finley to lead the Bulldogs girls squad through their first season.
“We have a full girls junior varsity team to feed our varsity,” said Gautschi.
On the boys team, Sky Sandberg should swim well in the freestyle and butterfly, and freshman Lance Wolfsmith is an incredible athlete according to Gautschi. Ammon Suzuki should also help lead the Sobrato boys team this season. The rest of the boys squad are very new to swimming and most have never swam competitively before.
“Our goal this season is to have everybody do well and work on their own personal goals,” said Gautschi. “It’s our first year, a building year. Winning is not what we’re looking at just yet.”
The Bulldogs were going to host their first meet against the Salinas Cowboys yesterday afternoon, but with the heavy rains the meet will be rescheduled for a later date.
