Sobrato closed out the first phase of its preseason in impressive fashion, beating Palma 25-20, 25-23, 25-15 Tuesday to notch its second win over former Tri-County Athletic League rivals in three decisions.
“We were looking forward to playing against our old TCAL teams,” junior Adam Morales said. “It’s the only way we can actually tell if we have improved over last year.”
The improvement and poise showed as the young Bulldogs (2-1) kept pace with the Chieftains in each game, before taking control late in the contest.
Actually, Sobrato got off to a strong start in the match, grabbing a 7-0 lead fueled by Bhupinder Ishpuniani. A perfectly placed hit by Dallin Bassett finished off the first game.
Palma led 3-0 in the second game before the Bulldogs charged back behind solid defense and all-around strong play. Sobrato was in control in the third game to notch its first sweep of an opponent.
Jared Mammen led the way with 17 digs and five blocks, Ishpuniani had 15 digs, Jason Binn had 13 digs and Robert Bowen had four blocks.
“I knew we could compete with the TCAL teams,” Sobrato co-coach Rosemary Miller said. “I am very proud of the boys’ dedication and desire to prove they know how to play.
The Bulldogs have a stern test at 7pm when they welcome Pioneer to Morgan Hill. Pioneer swept Gilroy on Wednesday.
Frosh-soph: Sobrato swept Palma 25-21, 25-17 for its first win. The Bulldogs were paced by Ali Aryanpour who led with nine aces. Jacob Maack and Brandon Maack led Sobrato with four kills apiece.
