Although Sobrato’s last win wasn’t an up-tempo, high-scoring affair, the Bulldogs were happy to go away with a 33-29 victory over Overfelt on Tuesday to secure first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division.

The win marked the eleventh in a row for the Bulldogs who have now finished the first half of league play with a 7-0 record. The Bulldogs were led by combo guard Marqus Crawford, who had nine points and 12 rebounds. Crawford was supported by Tom Buich who combined his tough work on the defensive boards with seven points, and Robert Mercado who had six points in what was a gritty, defense-oriented game. Buich had a game-high 16 rebounds.

After beating each team in their league through the first seven games, the Bulldogs realize that they will have the bull’s-eye on their back for the second half of league play. With a one-game lead over second place and defending co-champion Willow Glen, the Bulldogs will have an opportunity to win the BVAL conference and receive an automatic bid to the the Central Coast Sectional playoffs.

“I like our chances”, said coach Lawrence Crawford, “we don’t expect it to be easy. We are 7-0 leading the league, playing teams that are right behind us in the standings and are ready to beat us.”

First in line to take a shot at the unbeaten Bulldogs is Willow Glen, which will host Sobrato today. The Rams will have an opportunity to avenge their only league loss this season and force a tie in the standings as they are currently 6-1 in league this season.

“We expect them to make some adjustments in their attempt to give us our first (league) loss,” Crawford said. “The first game was well contested and we expect them to be ready in front of their home crowd.”

While Tuesday’s win over Overfelt wasn’t Sobrato’s most electrifying performance, it was enough to get another win and keep the Bulldogs above their league rivals.

The biggest test for Sobrato is today as the Bulldogs hope to move one step closer to their first league title.

“I think we will measure up if we can keep working hard and show that we can play to our potential,” Marqus Crawford said.
