SAN JOSE — Billy Birrell homered, drove in five runs and scored three times, and Chris Bradley tossed a complete-game one-hitter as the Sobrato baseball team shut out Leigh 9-0 Thursday in a pivotal Mount Hamilton Division contest.
The visiting Bulldogs broke a two-game losing streak and dragged the then-second place Longhorns into a three-way tie for third with Westmont. At 8-8 in league play, all three teams are a game behind Live Oak (8-7), which postponed Thursday’s contest with Branham because of the swine flu outbreak. Live Oak travels to Leland today.
Sobrato (13-12 overall) dropped back-to-back games to Leigh (14-11) earlier this season, but became the aggressor Thursday in San Jose, scoring three runs in the first inning.
The Bulldogs totaled 10 hits, including a 4-for-4 effort from Birrell. Robbie Coy and David Rotter had two RBIs apiece, with Coy doubling.
Bradley (3-5), meanwhile, was lights out once again. The junior lefty struck out nine and walked one to collect his fourth complete game this season. Bradley has surrendered nine hits during his last four starts.
