Bulldog Wrestlers Qualify for CCS Tourney

Five Bulldog wrestlers qualify for CCS
Morgan Hill – The Sobrato Bulldogs wrestling team sent eight wrestlers to the Tri-County Athletic League Championships on Friday in Gilroy. Five of the eight Bulldogs placed at the TCAL tournament to qualify for the Central Coast Section Tournament next weekend.

“The TCAL tournament capped off a good year,” said Sobrato coach Phil Luna. “Now it’s time to see what we have in the tank. Our goal is to make it into the top 15 as a team at CCS and have at least two wrestlers qualify for the State Championship.”

Sobrato placed fifth as a team at the TCAL finals with 90 points. They finished 10 points behind Salinas and 15 points behind the Palma Chieftains.

The young Bulldog team has fought hard all season to compete with older, more experienced squads in the TCAL.

At the 160-pound weight class, Victor Gillespe captured first place with a 9-6 victory over his opponent in the final.

“Victor wrestled real well,” said Luna. “Overall I felt real happy with the way things went.”

Moses Gillardo took second place at the 125-pound weight class for Sobrato. Gillardo lost in the final match to Gilroy’s Rudy Maldanado, 6-1.

“Technique wise Moses has one small thing that we are trying to rid him of,” said Luna.

Genaro Redmen also captured a second place finish for the Bulldogs. Redmen fell in the final match after being taken down in the last 30 seconds, 3-1.

“Genaro should’ve won his match. He couldn’t get away from his opponent and that is the first time he’s been held down for an entire match,” said Luna.

Mike McChesney earned a third place finish for Sobrato at the 112-pound weight class. The Bulldog freshman won his final match, 8-6.

“Mike wrestled really well to get back in and qualify,” explained Luna.

Jake Ortiz earned a fourth place finish at the finals, losing to his San Benito opponent, 7-6. Joseph Redmen also placed for the Bulldogs, coming sixth at the 103-pound weight class.

The qualifying Bulldogs head to Independence next weekend for CCS.
