Morgan Hill police will be out in force through Thanksgiving weekend making sure motorists and their passengers are buckled up.
A survey done by the police department since the campaign began Tuesday found that about 90 percent of Morgan Hill motorists buckle up. That’s below the statewide seat belt usage rate of 95.4 percent.
“There are no excuses. Nothing is worth risking the lives of you or your family,” Christopher Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety, said in a statement.
Properly restrained drivers, passengers and children have a 50 percent better chance of surviving a crash than unbelted occupants, according to a joint statement put out by the Morgan Hill police and California Office of Traffic Safety. “This should be the season of joy and thanksgiving, not tragedy.”
More than 175 local law enforcement agencies statewide and the California Highway Patrol will be participating in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization. Funding to support the campaign was provided through a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant.
