SAN JOSE — The Live Oak High School boys tennis team will have four players in the mix April 21 for the West Valley Division Singles/Doubles Tournament semifinals at Mount Pleasant High School.

Third-seeded Dylan Johnson and No. 4 Bryan Freitas of the Acorns advanced through the opening rounds of singles play April 1 as did the doubles team of LOHS top-single Derek Johnson and Ryan Campbell, who were seeded third.

Dylan Johnson and Freitas are two upset wins away from making it an all-Live Oak championship match. Johnson, who defeated San Jose’s Daniel Fauck in the second round after receiving a bye in the first because Del Mar forfeited the tournament, is set to face top-seeded Tim Tan of Overfelt. Freitas will take on No. 2 Gune Batjargal of San Jose fresh off beating Yerba Buena’s David Ly and Overfelt’s Roger Mountha in the first and second rounds, respectively.

Like his brother, Derek Johnson benefited from Del Mar’s withdrawal in the opening round. He and Campbell followed with a superb 6-3, 6-3 victory over Yerba Buena’s No. 2 tandem, David Le and Andy Tran. They will meet Willow Glen’s top doubles team in the semifinals.

Live Oak’s No. 2 pair of Bryant Gamboa and Q. Farrooqui defeated Kirk Cichocki and Robin Martin of San Jose in the first round but fell 6-4, 6-1 to the top-seeded duo from Yerba Buena in the second.

At 5-3 in league play, the Acorns have had a decent season though they are out of contention for the West Valley team championship. They have four matches left, starting April 14 at Yerba Buena.

Live Oak entered the Singles/Doubles Tournament having won three of its previous four matches. Behind a gritty singles sweep, the Acorns won 4-3 at Mount Pleasant on April 1. The Johnson twins and Campbell triumphed in three sets, and Freitas won 6-4, 6-1.

Before that, Live Oak handily beat Del Mar 6-1 on March 25 and San Jose 5-2 two days earlier.
