Acorns tally all six victories in straight sets Tuesday at Live
Oak High School
MORGAN HILL — It was a 6-1 drubbing by Live Oak; the wind, cold and solid play by the host Acorns were too much for Mount Pleasant on Tuesday at Live Oak High School.
It was the kind of West Valley Division opener second-year coach Brad Leach was hoping to see from his Live Oak boys tennis team, which claimed all six victories in straight sets.
The Acorns swept singles play. Derek Johnson defeated Chris Le 6-3, 6-4 in the top match; Ryan Campbell assumed winning form in beating Lewis Phangphonsa 6-4, 6-1; Dylan Johnson ousted Nathaniel Grospe 6-1, 6-2 and Bryan Freitas triumphed 6-3, 6-0 over Jerrold Ramiro.
Leach liked the teamwork he saw in his top pair, Q. Farrooqui and Bryant Gamboa, who struggled in the second set but closed out to win 6-2, 7-5 against Jackie Wu and Ken Giang.
“Farrooqui and Gamboa are becoming a very cohesive and strong doubles team,” Leach said in an e-mail. “I am very pleased with their progress.”
Live Oak’s Spencer McClellan and Clay Carlson won a nail-biter in the No. 3 doubles match, 7-5, 7-5, over David Trinh and Quoc Nguyen.
The Cardinals’ Kevin Wolfe and Joshua Mari earned their team’s lone victory, beating Marc Fischer and Alec Malakis 6-2, 6-1.
