Live Oak and Gilroy battle for the ball during Wednesday’s game.

The Live Oak boys water polo team continued to solidify its
position as one of the top water polo clubs in the area after the
recent 24-4 thrashing of Gilroy on Wednesday.
“We played extremely strong defense,” said coach Mack Haines, whose club is currently ranked in the top 10 in CCS. “We are really started to hit our stride right now.”

Jason Kim gave up just one goal in first half. With a strong offensive output, the Acorns were able to move to 6-0 in the league.

Ryan Gautschi and Corey Robinson led the way with seven points. Justin Short had five goals. Mike Mike Mitchell had and Kyle Fast each scored two goals and Mark Ahlin had one

After Gilroy’s Scott Dickson scored the first goal 34 seconds in, the Acorns quickly answered with three. Travis Gamble skipped a shot off the water into the back of the net to keep pace, but Live Oak scored the final four goals of the first quarter for a commanding 7-2 advantage.

“We’re sitting (around), not making a move to the ball,” said Gilroy coach Tom Clark. “They kept taking the ball away. We’re not making that first move. They just took us out of our game. They’re a good team and they do that”

Along with a swarming defense, Live Oak netted seven goals in the second quarter to extend to a 14-3 lead.

Gilroy tried to switch things up for a spark in the second half, but the Acorns were unphased – scoring seven goals for the third straight quarter.

Live Oak went on to score three more in the final quarter, while shutting out the Mustangs in the process.
