Morgan Hill – A six-run third inning gave the A’s the lead and they never looked back in a 8-5 MHPB Bronco Division win over the Giants.
The Giants struck first with three in the top of the second. Noah and Lucas Cooke both walked, moved up on passed balls and scored on a single by Jerrod Cerniglia. Joey Trilla later singled home Cerniglia for a 3-0 advantage.
Another run in the third boosted the Giants advantage to 4-0. Michael LemMon led off with a single and scored on a double by Jordan Santiago.
In the bottom of the third, the A’s did their damage. Lorenzo Aguayo singled home the first run. He advanced to second on a balk, stole third and scored on a throwing error.
Successive walks to Gonzalez and Matt Cummings put two runners on, and then the A’s Dylan Kral hit a home run into deep right to clear the bases and tie the score at 4-4. The A’s added two more on a single by Nelson Pyle and a walk to Andrew Bueno, who scored on sacrifices by Casey Dawes and Westyn Herscovitch.
The A’s added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Jarvis led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on a dropped third strike.
The Giants got one back in the fifth. LemMon singled and scored on a double by Santiago, but the threat ended when Jarvis, the A’s third baseman, made a diving catch to snag an blooper in the infield.
Back on offense, the A’s answered with the final run of the game. Pyle singled, stole second and third and scored on a Bueno single to make it 8-5.
In the sixth, A’s catcher Herscovitch threw out a Giants’ baserunner attempting to steal second and the Giants couldn’t score over the final two innings.
Yankees 7, Indians 3
Jason Struzik delivered a tie-breaking bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to propel the Yankees past the Indians.
Walks and a clutch single by Pete Athans helped the Indians take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Struzik, the Yankees’ pitched, helped limit the damage by picking a runner off first.
In the home half of the frame, the Yankees also took advantage of walks to get on the scoreboard. Three walks loaded the bases and a fielder’s choice and an error on a grounder hit by Tyler Pederson made it 2-1 Yankees.
The Indians countered in the third. Brandon Cressi reached on an error, Adam Belluomini singled and Kody Root singled home two runs before Yankees reliever Taylor Pullen ended the threat with two strike outs.
The game stayed 3-2 thanks to some clean defense by the Yankees. The Indians induced a run down with runners on first and third, but Pullen wheeled and threw home to catch Cressi trying to score. Two batters later, with the same situation, Struzik threw through to second and caught John Forestieri stealing to end the inning.
Nathan Batad pitched the sixth and seventh innings for the Yankees, allowing only Nick Giordano’s double while striking out four.
The Yankees tied the game in the fifth when Pederson singled, stole his way to third and scored on Matt Bellah’s squeeze bunt.
In the sixth, the Yankees loaded the bases before Struzik delivered his big hit to take a 6-3 advantage. He later scored on a squeeze bunt by Pederson.
