The Sobrato baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning Friday on its way to a 11-7 win over Evergreen Valley.

The win evens the Bulldogs’ Blossom Valley Athletic League eague record at 2-2.

The Cougars drew first blood in the top of the first inning by scoring two runs on an error.

But Sobrato answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning, batting around and taking control of the game.

Senior first basemen Bryan Yates led the Bulldogs with three hits and three RBIs.

The Bulldogs also got help from junior catcher Ryan Melicker, senior outfielder Antonino Davi and junior shortstop Billy Hill, who each had two hits and combined for four RBIs.

The Cougars edged the Bulldogs 6-2 in their first matchup on Wednesday and were 3-0 in league coming into Friday’s contest.

Sobrato coach Shorty Gutierrez was happy to even the series with Evergreen Valley.

“It was good to finally see our bats come alive,” Gutierrez said. “Everybody pitched and did their part. It was great to turn it around with a win early in the season. A loss would’ve definitely put us behind, but now we are keeping up with the competition.”

The Bulldogs combined for 13 hits on the afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Billy Birrell won his second outing of the season and got help from Sobrato’s combination of Davi and senior Tim Buich, who combined for three scoreless innings.

They will take on Oak Grove, which is undefeated in league play this season, at 3:30pm Wednesday at Sobrato.

As for Gutierrez and the rest of the Bulldogs, they want to take Friday’s win and start a winning streak in league play.

“Now that our pitchers are doing well and our hitters are coming around, we can try to stay somewhere near the top of our league,” Gutierrez said. “If we can win two out of three games from everybody in our league then we can keep a good roll and finish strong at the end of the season.”

Live Oak 7, Pioneer 2

Morgan Hill – The Acorns completed the two-game sweep of the Mustangs when the offense came alive in the middle innings Friday.

Pioneer held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth, but Live Oak (7-1 overall, 4-0 league) scored twice in the fourth to tie it and five more runs over the next two innings to get the win.

Tony Austin went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored and Matthew Cummins and Joe Forestieri both were 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Adam Perez had a double, RBI and run scored.

“The heart of our order really came through when we needed it,” coach Mark Cummins said.

Cummins got the win on the mound in relief of starter Tim O’Rourke. Cummins pitched three scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out four.

“We continue to get better and better and we are playing sound fundamental baseball which is a must if we are going to be successful in the top division of the BVAL,” Mark Cummins said.
