“Dear Red Phone, I bicycle along Santa Teresa Boulevard between Morgan Hill and Gilroy and have noticed recently an increase in trash and debris along the roadway. Does anyone sweep the roads?”
Red Phone: Dear Dodging Debris, Red Phone contacted the Santa Clara County Roads and Airports Department, which has a branch in San Martin, to see what could be done.
According to Ron Jackson, the deputy director of road maintenance, the county doesn’t regularly send sweepers out on the roads, but will send one out on certain occasions if there is a specific need for one.
“We just don’t have the manpower to do regular cleanings, and our sweeper is really old so it is not used too much,” he said. “Usually it is used just for emergencies.”
Even so, Jackson said he would put a request in with the South County yard to send the sweeper out on Santa Teresa Boulevard to clean up the street. Hopefully that will get rid of some of the debris and add a little more life to your tires.
While crews do patrol the roads for problems, residents are welcome to call the South County yard at 683-1240 if there are areas that require immediate attention, Jackson said.
Hope that answers your question, good caller.
Stop at red light, then proceed
“When driving from Anderson Lake on Cochrane Road, there is a sign going onto U.S. 101 northbound that says ‘stop here on red.’ Does this mean you can’t go at all on red, or you just have to make a stop? I’ve seen people doing both!”
Red Phone: Dear Stop or Go, Red Phone contacted Cpl. Rod Krewson with the Morgan Hill Police Department, who said you must stop at the light, then proceed as you would a right turn on red. Just remember to come to a complete stop, before moving onto the onramp.
Hope that answers your question, good caller.
Monterey Road pavers under repair
“Red Phone, I would like to know what’s going with Monterey Road and Third Street. It seems like the construction group just finished that repair. Now they are tearing it up and reinstalling it. Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear What’s Going On, Red Phone answered a similar question last week, but will repeat the answer for those who may have missed it. According to Yat Cho, associate engineer with the city, a few of the granite pavers recently installed with the Third Street project had come loose.
“Upon further investigation it was determined to be a workmanship problem and if not corrected would cause long-term maintenance and safety problems,” Cho said. “The city’s contractor is now fixing the problem at his cost. The work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 21.”
There you have it, good caller.
