Betty Jane Sachara, 80, died Dec. 14, 2004.
Betty was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 29, 1924. She moved to Rialto in 1957 with her husband and three children as the result of her husband’s involvement in the rocket industry.
She graduated from Notre Dame College in Ohio. She taught high school journalism, English and Spanish. Her passion for writing was recognized with numerous awards for her poetry that included religious, family and nature themes.
Her poems were published in several anthologies of poetry. The highlight of Betty’s lifetime of writing was “Pope of Peace,” a collection of poetry dedicated to Pope John Paul II. A leather-bound calliographed copy was presented to the Pope on his visit to Monterey in 1987.
Betty was a guest columnist for the Gilroy Dispatch newspaper and frequently submitted letters to the editor expressing her views on public policy. Betty studied piano and taught informally.
She played the piano for pleasure, including her favorites Chopin and Beethoven. She was a resident of Gilroy for the past 30 years. She was a devoted and beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Eugene Francis Sachara; sons Lance Sachara of Gilroy and Mark Sachara of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter Lynette Hill of Hesperia; grandchildren Stephanie Maguire of Hesperia, Michelle Carlson of Apple Valley, Lance Sachara Jr. of San Jose and Jessica Sachara of Yakima, Wash.; and great-grandchildren Ben, Ethan and Cora of Hesperia.
Mass of Christian Burial took place at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hesperia. Interment was at Desert View Memorial Park in Victorville.
