The two-week holiday vacation was a wonderful break from the daily grind of school. Students caught up on sleep, hung out with friends, and visited with family.

The vacation was relaxing, fun-filled, and stress-free. The first weekend of the holiday vacation, some Live Oak students went on the Invasion snowboarding trip. Our students bundled up in their skiing and snowboarding gear and boarded a bus headed towards Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. The 12-hour bus ride was elongated due to an accident that closed the freeway, but our students arrived safely and ready to hit the slopes. The trip was a definite success.

Everyone was extremely excited to celebrate the new year, especially the seniors. 2003 is the big year for our senior Nuts. In less than six months, seniors will be walking across a stage to receive their tickets out of high school: their diplomas! Come June, seniors’ biggest dream will finally become a reality.

Alas, the end of vacation is inevitable. Students return to school to face the infamous “dead week.” By definition, “dead week” is the week before finals in which teachers usually pass out study guides and no school field trips are permitted. However, each year the so-called “dead week” seems to be one of the busiest weeks of the school year.

Students usually receive more homework. Now, if I were a teacher, I would take dead week quite literally. I would pass out study guides and just advise my students to study for finals homework free. However, students return to school to hit the books and do more homework.

This Thursday, Live Oak is offering the Economics Golden State Exam. The three-hour test is given only to seniors. Passing a Golden State Exam with honors or high honors looks excellent on college resumes. In addition, the results are printed on a student’s high school transcript and a gold seal is stamped on the high school diploma.

Students return to a couple hectic weeks of school. However, we can look forward to minimum days during finals week. Plus, students get the Friday of finals week off due to a teacher in-service day. And to top it all off, students get the following Monday off as well due to Martin Luther King Jr. day! Even though school may get a litte crazy, it is always reassuring to look forward to more vacation.

Katrina Sparacino, a senior at Live Oak, is commissioner of academics and a part of the Live Oak Dance Company. She and other student body officers write a column on a rotating basis.
