Are we over-reacting to the outbreak of swine flu?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Are we over-reacting to the outbreak of swine flu?” Yes: 0 No: 8
? John Quick: “I think the government response is just right. This gets the supplies in place to deal with a serious outbreak should it occur. The news response may scare people into acting cautiously, which can greatly reduce the number of those getting sick.”
? Steve Staloch: “No. Millions have no immunity and no known vaccine exists.”
? Bert Berson: “No. The potential danger is too great to do otherwise.”
? Linda McNulty: “Not over-reacting, with one dead; 95 diagnosed; and two schools in the Bay Area closed.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “Not yet, but it’s a delicate balance. Government needs to – and is – take appropriate action; media needs to report on this without sensationalizing the situation.”
? Emily Shem-Tov: “It’s good to be prepared and have plans because even if this one isn’t so deadly, more will come. But we shouldn’t get hysterical – bad information and panic can be equally disastrous.”
? Chris Bryant: “Only time will tell. If the seriousness of this outbreak turns out to be minor then this may put doubts in people’s minds the next time a warning is issued. However, if we don’t do anything then the outbreak could well be very serious. Better to be safe than sorry.”
? Karen Anderson: “N0? In fact, it concerns me that we are not taking temperatures at airports and the border as Asian governments did for SARS and Avian flu.”
