Is the controversy surrounding Meg Whitman’s employment of an
undocumented housekeeper relevant to the gubernatorial race?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Is the controversy surrounding Meg Whitman’s employment of an undocumented housekeeper relevant to the gubernatorial race?” Yes: 9 No: 3
? Karen Anderson: “Yes. Shows she was not prepared to answer for hiring an illegal. Public officials need to be able to give consistent truthful responses and not underestimate the opposition.”
? Dave Appling: “Certainly. It’s a window into the candidate’s character. It’s not that she employed an undocumented alien. It’s her failure to woman-up once the issue surfaced, and her callous treatment of a long-time, trusted family employee. To Whitman, Nicky DÃaz is just one of those ‘little people.’ ”
? Bert Berson: “Yes. Meg’s loyalty and honesty under pressure are on the table.”
? Chris Bryant: “No, law breakers are not victims just because they where involved with a high profile individual or had managed to get away with it for so long.”
? Bob Chidester: “Yes. It demonstrates Whitman did exactly the right thing. She hired the illegal housekeeper through an agency whose responsibility was to properly vet the housekeeper. When the housekeeper revealed she was here illegally, Whitman properly terminated her employment. Thanks to the housekeeper’s own attorney, counselor Gloria Allred, the housekeeper has been ‘outed’ and is now subject to deportation.”
? David Cohen: “Yes. It represents an issue of character and shows her ‘executive’ skills in blaming others.”
? Mary Anne Groen: “Yes, it gives us an indication of how she might hide or ignore problems.”
? Julian Mancias: “Yes. The issue is focused on trust. Is she telling the truth or not?”
? Henry Miller: “Is the controversy relevant? No. Nor is the fact, itself. But her denial is certainly relevant. She needs to remember Harry Truman’s famous line: ‘The buck stops here.’ Trying to blame others and denying her own involvement did far more damage than the act itself.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “Yes, for at least three reasons: No. 1, Whitman has described illegal immigration as a big problem for California; No. 2, Whitman has advocated penalizing employers who hire undocumented workers; No. 3, the episode provides evidence about Whitman’s character.”
? Jeff Smith: “No it’s not. It’s a desperate smear campaign from the left, no more, no less. What this situation does show is that Meg followed the law – she went through an agency, and when she learned the housekeeper was illegal she let her go. The liberals have strange logic on this one – they want to grant full citizenship to all illegals, but then cry foul if you employ them.”
? Steve Staloch: “Yes. Having billions apparently does not buy immunity from hypocrisy or double standards.”
