Is a full body scan a reasonable security measure at
airports?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Is a full body scan a reasonable security measure at airports?” Yes: 9 No: 3
? Karen Anderson: “No. Not unless a pat down by a same sex officer is an option. Too invasive of one’s privacy and will have a highly negative impact on airline revenues.”
? Dave Appling: “Yes. The only viable alternative is a 100 percent major patdown, or worse. Given today’s threat, it’s unreasonable NOT to conduct full body scans. And TSA appears to have plenty of personal-modesty safeguards in place.”
? Bert Berson: “Yes. If it works well and is fast and precise enough.”
? Chris Bryant: “Yes, However not the only measure. Each technology has shortcomings and multiple types must be utilized.”
? David Cohen: “Yes, but it won’t be the fail sale answer people think it is.”
? Julian Mancias: “Yes. If it will assist in making flying safer then it is definitely worth doing.”
? Henry Miller: “Absolutely! And for those who think it is an invasion of their privacy, let them all fly together on the same plane with others who feel the same way.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “Not as a replacement for better information sharing among the US’s intelligence agencies.”
? John Quick: “Yes, if it is used to speed things up. A better security alternative would be for the various agencies responsible for airport and flight safety to actually talk to each other like they are supposed to do under the bogus Homeland Security Act. The recent bombing attempt wouldn’t have happened if our people were talking to each other.”
? Emily Shem-Tov: ‘Seems less invasive than being patted down, but any new technological solution won’t solve all the problems in the process.”
? Jeff Smith: “No it is not. I don’t believe it will keep us any safer, but will unnecessarily add to the cost and crazy hassle we already go through to get on a plane. Our system would be much more effective if we would screen for terrorists instead of screening for fingernail clippers, greater than 4 ounces of baby formula and other nonsense.
? Steve Staloch: “Yes, and a reasonable compromise to Orwellian measures such as retina and facial scans.”
