Do you agree with a recent New York City Landmark Commission’s

forward?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:

“Do you agree with a recent New York City Landmark Commission’s decision to allow plans for a mosque near ground zero to move forward?” Yes: 6 No: 4

? Karen Anderson: “Yes. If it is not a landmark building, it cannot be protected. However, I think it is insensitive of the Muslims to try to locate so close to ground zero.”

? Dave Appling: “Yes. From the evidence, the proposed Islamic center is legitimate, benign, and not a provocation. Absent ill intent, this is a matter of religious tolerance and First Amendment freedoms. Yes, 9/11’s wounds are still very raw – which does not excuse us from doing the right thing.”

? Chris Bryant: “Yes, if they meet building codes and zoning requirements then there should be no restriction.”

? Bob Chidester: “No. “We are at war with the radical faction of Islam and the people behind this mosque appear to part of this radical group. A mosque in this location would only add insult to injury.”

? Dennis Kennedy: “Yes! The decision should be based on the local zoning codes, local land-use policies and the Commission’s charge and not on an emotional reaction to a terrorist attack by a group of religious extremists. If the same opportunity is given to any other religious entity, then it should also be given to a Muslim entity. It must be fair to all concerned.”

? Julian Mancias: “No. Many local citizens are still in the ’emotional recovery stage,’ and they should not be burdened by this request.”

? Henry Miller: “Certainly not! And I feel the argument for religious freedom is far less compelling than the argument for sensitivity. Imagine how Muslims would react if roles were reversed.”

? Lisa Pampuch: “Yes. Prohibiting the mosque violates core American Constitutional principles and federal law. Allowing it shows that we’re ruled by laws, not knee-jerk reactions.”

? Jeff Smith: “Absolutely not. I think building a mosque near ground zero is deliberately insulting and disrespectful to the families of 9/11 victims and to all freedom loving Americans. They claim it will be a center to promote ‘healing’ and ‘better relations with the West.’ I believe it will do just the opposite.”

? Steve Staloch: “Yes, and surprised that in a country that so zealously protects the right to worship, and the separation of church and state, that any person of reasonable intellect would consider this a serious issue.”
