Got Pool?

What will it take for Morgan Hill to see the value in adding a world class swim center? Maybe another Safeway? It boggles the mind how the city council can stumble on the question to add a swim center with 50m pool, while it seems that adding Starbucks, drug stores, fast food and yet another Safeway is a good idea.

Give me a break. I was born and raised in this community and now have started my own family here in Morgan Hill. I enjoy all the aquatic programs and facilities the city has to offer. I am so excited about being able to raise my son here in Morgan Hill and hope that aquatics plays a major roll in our recreational and educational experience.

A swim center is needed because of the lack of pool space in this large aquatics oriented city. I know this personally by having coached waterpolo at Live Oak for Mack Haines and then on my own as the girls head coach.

No offense to the swim clubs, but I did not like sharing the pool with the city swim team for my daily after school practices. It was more than difficult to work on swimming conditioning when the team players were restricted to the use of the diving well. With this said, if there had been more pool space available, the swim team would have been using a city pool rather than the high school pool, making more pool space available for the students that attended Live Oak.

We as a city need that swim center more then we need another fast-food restaurant or supermarket. In fact, the swim center would help to counteract all that unhealthy fast food by providing a place for all ages to exercise, relax, learn to swim, compete in individual and team situations and meet new friends. All of these are great life improving activities that you won’t find in a cheeseburger or the frozen foods section.

Now the question about the 50m pool. We need it. Plain and simple. Without it, you might as well just put in another Taco Bell with a hot tub in the drive through … exactly it doesn’t make any sense.

Take a look at any successful swim center and the centerpiece is the 50m pool. You need it for competition (read, revenue for surrounding businesses because a whole bunch of people from all around will bring their families here to compete in swim meets, water polo tournaments and other aquatic events). You also need the 50m competition pool to accommodate all the people that will want to swim there in the morning before work, or during their lunch breaks from local business, and on the weekends with the family to stay healthy and happy.

City Council; Don’t drop the ball this close to the goal line by not approving the 50m pool as part of phase 1 of the aquatic center. It would be a total disappointment and a slap in the face to all who have worked to get this aquatic center this far. Please do the right thing for our community and approve the 50m pool as part of phase 1.
