The natural splendor of Anderson Lake County Park has become a long-time favorite for those who love the outdoors. Whether it’s boating, water skiing, fishing, bicycling, hiking or picnicking, there’s something for everyone at this spectacular 3,109-acre park nestled in the eastern hillsides of Morgan Hill.
At the heart of the park is Anderson Lake, the largest reservoir in Santa Clara County. With almost seven miles of shoreline, the lake welcomes powered and non-motored boats alike, along with fishermen looking to hook a bluegill or two. And the sweet smell of someone’s barbeque can often be found at the family and group picnic facilities located at the Woodchoppers area at the south end of the lake.
“This is an especially good time to visit as the crowds are thinner during the winter season,” says Senior Park Ranger Mike Bacon. “It’s a great place to get away from the hubbub of city life. The trails are a little quieter, there are more choices of where to set up a picnic, and the overall atmosphere is simply more peaceful and serene.”
In addition to the lake, the park features the Coyote Creek Parkway, the Moses L. Rosendin Park and the Burnett Park area. All combine to provide a truly unique combination of recreational resources.
“My family and I have been coming to Anderson Lake County Park for many years to relax, enjoy the fresh air and take in the all the greenery.” says one longtime park visitor.
“We particularly love to take the easy, one-mile self-guided nature trail located along Coyote Creek. Sometimes we even catch a glimpse at the abundant wildlife that make their habitat along the bank.”
Open year-round from 8am until sunset, the park collects vehicle entry and lake use fees daily, including fees required for group picnic reservations. Fees are typically $5 per vehicle, and an additional $5 for use of the boat launch. For details, the park office can be reached at (408) 779-3634 or by visiting the Web site at www.parkhere.org.
“Our ranger and maintenance staff work hard to provide a quality recreational environment that everybody can enjoy,” says Senior Park Ranger Michael Bacon.
Anderson Lake and the picnic areas along the Coyote Creek are located on Cochrane Road in Morgan Hill, east of Highway 101. To reach the Woodchopper’s picnic area, follow Dunne Avenue east from Highway 101. The Coyote Creek Parkway multiple-use trails can be reached at the Anderson Lake Ranger Office located at 19245 Malaguerra Ave., Morgan Hill. Take Cochrane Road east from Highway 101. Turn left onto Malagaerra Avenue and follow it to the end of the road. The office phone is (408) 779-3634.
Formed in 1956, the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department currently oversees 27 park units that encompass nearly 45,000 acres. Offering a variety of opportunities for recreation, County Parks are regional, meaning they are often larger in size and usually 200 acres more than local neighborhood or community grounds.
