Dear Editor,

To set the record straight, Greenbelt Alliance has not endorsed the Coyote Valley Specific Plan as Robert Benich stated in his opinion piece in the Feb. 26 edition. In fact, Greenbelt Alliance remains very critical of the Specific Plan, which has really missed an opportunity.

In Coyote Valley, the City of San Jose has the chance to create a great new community, with vibrant neighborhoods, walkable streets, and reliable transit. But the City is squandering that chance with a low-density design that separates jobs and homes and makes walking difficult. In addition, the City is planning to spend far too much on unnecessary projects like an artificial lake, an untested transit system, and a complete redesign of the road system. These costly projects will not leave enough funding for true community needs, like affordable housing and a protected greenbelt.

Unless the city’s plan puts true priorities first, Greenbelt Alliance will continue to oppose it.

Greenbelt Alliance will also continue to urge the city’s planners to keep their options open by considering our report, Getting It Right, as an alternative to the Specific Plan.

The Coyote Valley Specific Plan is a waste of a 6,800-acre opportunity.
