San Martin – Any kids in your family interested in aviation? Or moms, dads and grandparents? Bring them to the Wings of History Air Museum and South County Airport Open House Saturday, May 14, 8-4pm.
The event is intended to encourage young people to experience aviation. Free airplane rides will be offered, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles Program. Tours through the Wings of History Air Museum feature historical aircraft.
Also on display at the airport across the street from the museum will be general aviation airplanes hosted by pilots from SCAPA, the South County Airport Pilots Association.
The Young Eagles program provides an opportunity for youths between 8 and 17 years of age to talk with a pilot, fly in a private plane and learn about exploring our skies. Sponsored by the EAA, the Young Eagles program is a free activity for kids.
Young Eagle pilots will offer free rides from 10am-2pm. Parents must accompany participating children to the airport and plane, and sign a release and authorization form.
Once this paperwork is completed, the kids will fly with an EAA-sanctioned Young Eagles pilot.
The new Young Eagle’s name will be entered into the World’s Largest Logbook. Kids also will be eligible for raffle prizes – including flight lessons.
There’s more. Activities getting under way at the museum site, 12777 Murphy Ave., San Martin, include tethered hot air balloon demonstrations at 6:30am, biplanes, guided tours of the museum, a display of vintage aircraft and more aviation-related events, including plastic model building and flying model construction classes.
