School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County (SHCSCC) has announced its new status as a separate organization. Formerly operated as a program of The Health Trust, SHCSCC’s focus remains reaching at risk children where they are most accessible – in schools.

“The Health Trust was instrumental in growing our organization, and shares our goal of providing accessible, quality primary health care to low-income children,” said Sue Lapp, executive director of SHCSCC. “In addition, The Health Trust will continue to provide the bulk of our outside support and help us extend further benefit to children’s health care in the community.”

The newly formed School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County received a “Healthy Schools/Healthy Communities” grant awarded by the federal government. This grant, worth $210,853, is renewable annually and specifically funds two of the organization’s eight clinics, the Eliot Neighborhood Health Clinic and the Yerba Buena High School Clinic. These sites have been named Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), a designation which brings potential for additional funding increases.

SHCSCC will continue its 16-year relationship with area schools and provide underserved children with the primary medical care that they need. Preventative health continues to be the main focus of this program, and SHCSCC works to prevent expensive emergency room visits through well child care, case management and health education programs.

Additional focus has recently been placed on the importance of school-based health clinics. According to a recent nationwide survey, 83% of Americans support the existence of school based health clinics. A 650% increase in school-based health centers nationwide since 1990 has resulted from this recognition and from parents’ overwhelming support.

The administrative offices of School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County are now located on 98 N. 17th Street in San Jose, 95112, and the phone number for more information is (408) 947-8804.

By operating eight strategically located clinics throughout Santa Clara County, the organization provides more than 10,000 visits by school children each year. School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County is the only school based health center program in Santa Clara County.
