The Live Oak Roller Hockey team knocked Monta Vista out of the running with a huge win in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday night.
Heading into the finals seeded No. 3, the Acorns beat Monta Vista 8-7 and will now face off against the first place Santa Theresa team on Friday night for the championship.
Unable to defeat Monta Vista during the regular season, Live Oak with almost the whole team in tact this time played an exciting game.Â
Senior Chase Norman started it off for Live Oak scoring the first goal of the game from an assist off Brian Costello. He added one more goal plus two assists.Â
Junior Conner Williamson hit in the second goal. Kyle Dutra scored four goals for Live Oak and had one assist.Â
At halftime the score was 6-1 in favor of Live Oak.Â
Coming out strong in the second half, Monta Vista scored six straight goals. Then Costello scored again to tie it up 7-7. With only 24 seconds left in the game, Dutra dominated the puck and scored the game-winning goal.
Junior Tyler Damron and Sophmore Michael Widergren also made some critical contributions to the game. Making key saves in the net, was senior Ricky Lasher who stayed alert and ready to block off Monta Vista’s persistant attempts to score.
Scott Alexander anchored the defense, along with his teammates, was strong and able to redirect the puck from the determined Monta Vista offense which ultimately left the Monta Vista team short.
Live Oak plays for the championship Friday night 6pm at Rollin Ice against the No.1 seeded Santa Theresa team.Â
