SAN JOSE — The badminton team from Live Oak High School battled to 2-0 in West Valley Division play Tuesday with an 8-7 victory over James Lick.
The Comets went 5 for 6 in singles matches, but the visiting Acorns won seven of the nine doubles games, losing one by forfeit, to clinch the win.
Live Oak’s girl pairs swept in impressive form. Jessica Liang and Ada Tan won 15-1, 15-2; Kristen Pitsenbarger and Sayuri Ramirez rolled 15-0, 15-1; and Naromi Ramirez and Brittanie Lloyd triumphed 15-9, 15-7.
The Acorns’ two boy teams followed suit, as Addien Wray and Peter Mains won 15-12, 15-6; and Miguel Mahany and Jaehoon Kim 15-13, 15-12.
Live Oak dropped the top mixed doubles match, tying the team score 7-7, but countered with wins by Shahrooz Bastamy and Sara Ann Garber — 15-0, 15-4 — and Steven Nonnenmacher and Katie Fernandez — 15-8, 15-14.
The Acorns’ No. 1 boys single, Johann Abordo, stayed perfect on the year with a three-set victory over John Chua, 15-4, 9-15, 15-4.
Live Oak returns home Thursday to host Pioneer at 3:30 p.m.
