Live Oak Cross Country had a strong showing at the Sierra Invitational at Crystal Springs Saturday, Oct. 11.

Although the Acorns were missing a top runner, the team still placed eight out of 21 teams.

For the boys, Billy Wong finished first for Live Oak, seventh overall, with a time of 16:16. Behind him was Jesus Atanacio with a time of 17:40. Third and fourth were Brent Hatakeyama and Jonathan Kamei, who finished just seconds after each other.

Josh Craig has been struggling lately, but he says Craig is improving.

“He has been struggling, but he’s aware of it,” said Acorn head coach Dean Raymond.

Leading the way for the girls was Cobbie Jones. Although she finished third, the two runners ahead of her were not from CCS. Also finishing well was Yesenia Miranda, Daniella King, Heather Hays and Rigina Bawdon.

Jones has continued to run well for Live Oak. Ramond says she ran this race as well as the boys.

“She ran as fast as our third place varsity finisher at 18:10,” said Raymond.

Raymond was pleased with the runners saying that while some of them have not run this track in the past they gained some valuable experience.

“Billy has been consistent all year,” Raymond said. “Brent is running real well. He’s a sophomore and running with the maturity of a junior or a senior.”

“Last week, they backed off in their intensity,” Raymond said. “They brought it back. I’m real pleased with the team.”

Tennis

Notre Dame’s tennis squad cruised past Live Oak on Thursday, winning the meet by a score of 6-1.

The Acorns Mallorie Stevens started off tough in opening the meet, but fell short 6-3, 2-6, 4-6.

In the second match Katie Bohn defeated Live Oak’s Amanda Bouchet 6-4, 6-0.

The Acorn’s bright spot of the day came on Shaila Patel’s 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Prescilla Apilado in the third match.

Kim Watatsuki lost the fourth match 6-4, 0-6, 2-6. And to start off doubles play, Megan Smart and Rachelle Abby were defeated 6-2, 4-6, 4-6. Sharlyn Tharayil and Brittany Scolars also lost to the Spirits 1-6, 0-6 before the short-handed Live Oak squad was forced to forfeit the final doubles match.
