In a showdown with the Hollister-San Benito girls and boys teams, Live Oak High girls and boys water polo scored early and often Wednesday,. with both teams emerging victorious.

At Hollister, the Acorn girls defeated the Haybalers 15-7, while at Live Oak, the Acorn boys won 19-8.

The Live Oak girls (16-4, 6-0 TCAL) got off to a quick 5-0 lead before Hollister could find the net. And they did it all without a goal from Ronni Gautschi, who led all scorers with six goals.

“It was our best passing game this year,” Gautschi said. “We were working well together, especially in the pool.”

Brianna Sennert and Laura Shope each scored two goals and Amanda Cretcher had one in the opening period to set the pace for Live Oak.

San Benito fell to 5-2 in TCAL (14-10 overall).

“They made us work,” Traverso said. “They are an aggressive team. Even when we were up 5-0, they kept fighting back. Our passing has been herendous, but it was much better today. We played a lot as a team.”

Meanwhile, the Live Oak boys defeated the Baler boys in a matchup Wednesday of undefeated league teams.

Ryan Gautschi had eight goals for Live Oak (5-0 in TCAL, 19-6 overall), while Justin Short added six. The Balers fell to 4-1 in TCAL, 12-11 overall.

“It is always interesting when we play Holister, we know each other so well,” Haines said. “It was enjoyable, but at the same time there was a lot of respect for both teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if we played them for the league championship.”

The water polo season is winding down with only two more events on their schedule before heading into the playoffs.

The Acorn boys will compete at the State Invitational next weekend.

LO cross-country

On Monday, the Live Oak cross country teams hosted Gilroy at the Anderson Dam course. The first race of the afternoon was the varsity boys, and the race for first place was a barnburner.

Gilroy’s Arnulfo Velasquez battled Billy Wong from Live Oak literally the entire three mile distance. As they crossed the finish line, neither runner could be separated, so a tie was declared with both now sharing the course record of 16:05.

Although the race for first was close, the overall team scoring was not, as the Acorns ran away from the Mustangs by the score of 20 to 36.

Live Oak took the next three places with Jesus Atanacio running 16:44, followed by Jonathan Kamei at 16:54, and Nick Mott at 17:12. This was the final dual meet of the season for the Acorns.

On the ladies side, LO’s Cobbie Jones took first with a time of 19:05, just ahead of second-place Lisa Herrera in 19:25.

The TCAL Championships will be Saturday, Oct. 30 at Toro Park in Salinas. The boys ended their league schedule with a 4-1 record, a loss to Hollister was their only blemish.

LIve Oak was coming off a trip to Fresno on Friday, Oct. 15 to compete on the State Meet course at Woodward Park. The Acorns were led by Jones who placed third in her race with a fast time of 19:19. For the boys, Wong turned in a time of 16:59.

LO girls volleyball

Despite one of their best players sitting out the game, the Live Oak High girls volleyball team beat North Salinas in three games 25-8, 25-21., 25-7 Wednesday.

Senior Juliette Bowers had been traveling and sat out the match on head coach’s Laura Coleman’s request. But in Bowers’s absence, senior Tiven Catrett, who has been sidelined with an injury for most of the season, came back though she is still not 100 percent, according to Coleman.

The win now pulls LO’s record even in league, 3-3 (13-13 overall). The Acorn girls will travel to Milpitas this weekend for a tournament.

LO girls tennis

The young Acorn girls tennis team were swept against Notre Dame, 7-0.

All the players went down in two sets, but Kattie Renteria put on the hardest fight of the day falling 6-4, 7-6(9-7).
