The Live Oak volleyball team defeated Seaside 15-7, 15-3, 15-9 Friday and advanced to the consolation finals of the Charger Classic tournament at Leland.

The Acorns recorded 32 team kills without big man Drew Pearson, who was competing in a basketball tournament. Chris Deem led the way with eight kills. Royce Newcomb had six, Terry Sullivan had five and Matt McElroy had four.

Seaside took a 8-4 lead in the third game, but the Acorns held on against the smaller team.

Live Oak started the Leland tournament with a 8 a.m. game and finished at 9 p.m. for a full day of volleyball.

In the first match, Live Oak lost to CCS champion Mount Madonna 15-8, 15-12.

“It was much closer than score indicated,” said coach John Telfer. “It was the first match of year everyone was there.”

Gavin Kolodge was returning to action after a back injurry. Pearson, who was juggling basketball tournament duties all day, was there for the first game and for the last two of the day.

In the second game, Live Oak lost to Saint Lorence Academy 9-15, 15-6, 13-15.

“That two-minute lapse in the third game cost us a chance to go into the winner’s brackett,” Telfer said. “But we got more volleyball in this way.”

In the final game of pool play, Live Oak defeated Pioneer 15-0, 15-13. Live Oak defeated a scrappy Branham team 16-14 in the third round of the consolation bracket opener. In the semifinals, Live Oak defeated Westmont 15-7, 15-9.

In the finals, Live Oak lost to last year’s CCS finalist San Lorenzo Valley 15-8, 15-6

“I was pleased with the the day,” Telfer said. “They had more fire to them. They were doing what they had to do to play defense the way its supposed to be played with some great defensive digs.”

Live Oak will be at Monterey on Wednesday. The Acorns will have to shut down outside hitter Adam Bristow, who can sometimes be a one-man show.

The game on Friday with Hollister has been resceduled for April 8 because of the Live Oak junior prom.
