Live Oak singles sweep Gilroy; match against Sobrato rescheduled
due to rain
Morgan Hill – Following two consecutive spring days without rain, the skies opened again on Friday afternoon suspending the Live Oak Acorns tennis team’s match against the Sobrato Bulldogs. The match has been tentatively rescheduled for Thursday.

On Thursday, the Acorns (4-2 TCAL) were able to get in their match against the Gilroy Mustangs in Gilroy and came away with the 6-1 victory.

“It was a good match,” said Live Oak coach Miki Matsumoto. “It has rained every Tuesday. I hope that we can get all these matches made up.”

In the most exciting match of day, the Acorns No. 2 doubles team of freshmen BJ Heinan and Mason Lammers defeated Mustangs Matt Baltar and Justin Rodriguez, 7-5, 1-6, 10-7, to notch their first win as a team Heinan and Lammers came from behind twice to overcome their opponents. In the first set, Heinan and Lammers were down 1-4 before rallying to take the set, 7-5, and again in the tiebreaker they found themselves trailing 1-5, but overtook the Mustangs, 10-7 for the win.

In singles action, Live Oak’s No. 1 junior Eric Matsumoto controlled his match against Gilroy’s Ben Wilson for the 6-2, 6-1 victory. Matsumoto is 4-2 on the season and has a good chance at making it into the Central Coast Section tournament.

Jimmy Shedden, Kevin Parsons and Danny Smith, whose record on the year is 4-1, also had singles wins for the Acorns and the doubles team of Scott Alexander and Jake Plafker won their match in straight sets. Live Oak’s doubles team of Mike Acevedo and Chiraag Vyas were defeated by Mustangs Zach Singh and Esteban Delgadillo in straight sets.

On Monday the Acorns host the Palma Chieftains in a rescheduled match. In the first matchup between these two teams the Chieftains handily defeated the Acorns. This time, Live Oak would like to compete more closely with Palma.

“Eric barely lost to Palma’s No. 1 last time and he wants revenge,” said Matsumoto.
