’s wrestling team took second in its division at Leigh High’s
Stampede Tournament last weekend. At 112 pounds, LO’s Eddie Mendoza
won the tourney’s “Outstanding Wrestler” and “Most Pins” awards in
the lighter weights, compiling a 5-0 record. In the heavier
weights, Acorn Brett Jones
led the way with a 5-0 record, and also earned the tourney’s
“Most Pins” award. LO’s Mitch Haaser also excelled in the tourney
with a 4-0 record.

Other LO wrestlers who competed at the tourney included Matt Mito and Robbie Rodriguez (125), Buck Tanner (130), Raul Paredes (135), Moriah Fernandez (145), and Sean Simonsen (189).
First-year coach Robert Fernandez said he was pleased with the strength of his team’s overall performance despite having to forfeit matches in several weight classes.
“It is very early in the season and I am seeing some solid development from several of the wrestlers,” he said. “In the last few weeks, we have had very good performances from Mendoza, Jones and Haaser and all of the wrestlers are continuing to learn and improve at each match.
“It is tough to forfeit team points so this week is a very big second-push recruiting week for us. There are athletes at Live Oak who have wrestled before or who want to wrestle. We just have to get them into our wrestling room. Now is a good time for a recruit to come on to our team.”
Live Oak competes in Terra Nova High’s Peninsula Invitational Tournament in Pacifica on Saturday.
