If Wednesday night’s match against Gilroy didn’t convince the Live Oak High girls soccer team it can’t sleepwalk through league play, perhaps nothing will.
Playing against a determined but outclassed Mustang team, the defending Central Coast Section Division I co-champion Acorns allowed their opponent to hang around long enough to benefit from a couple of questionable calls and forge a 2-2 tie.
But LO coach Tony Vasquez refused to focus on the officiating.
“Gilroy played hard but after playing against Mitty and Notre Dame-Belmont, dropping into the league is kind of a letdown,” Vasquez said. “I think it’s more mental than anything. I think it’s more about our girls thinking they can walk through league. They don’t understand that we’re CCS champs and for these teams this is their CCS when they play us.”
Midway through the second half, LO’s Michelle McDonald sent a corner kick in front of the Gilroy goal that Jenny Emick knocked in for a 1-0 Acorn lead. After GHS tied it up, McDonald struck again, setting up Lena Marsh for a goal to make the score 2-1 LO. But the Mustangs tallied the equalizer with just minutes to play.
LO is 3-6-3 overall, 2-0-1 in TCAL.
