Victories like the Live Oak High girls soccer team’s 1-0 win over Presentation on a rainy Tuesday can be a big boost for a program’s aspirations.
A victory over a private school from the tradition-ally dominant West Catholic Athletic League, and a defending section co-champion to boot, is a big step forward for any public school athletic program.
But for the Acorn girls, Tuesday’s victory was even more significant consid-ering the slow start they had this season — managing just one win in its first four games.
Live Oak coach Tony Vasquez said the win over Presentation was big.
“This is a really good win for us,” Vasquez said. “You always love beating those West Catholic Athletic League teams. We usually start slow (during the season). But we’re playing pretty well right now.”
Live Oak (2-1-2 overall) got its lone goal from Jaime Hickey, who scored from inside 10 yards on an assist from Janae Pimentel in the first half.
The Acorns’ defense, led by senior Bridgette Bonfiglio and goalie Andrea Riolo, was the difference despite Presentation’s rel-entless offensive attack.
Presentation kept the ball in the Acorns’ half of the field for much of the match.
But the Panthers could only manage a shot that banged off the post in the first half and a flyer that skimmed just over the goal in the second half against the Live Oak defense.
The Acorn girls qualified for the CCS playoffs after claiming another league title but lost in the quarters.
Live Oak was scheduled to host another defending CCS champion, Santa Cruz, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Live Oak High boys won their third straight of the season by downing host Wilcox 2-1 on Monday.
Acorn junior Hussein Abdulahi scored both goals for Live Oak, which improved to 4-2 overall with the victory.
The Acorn boys are scheduled to play Los Gatos at the Homestead Cup on Saturday.
