After battling a goal-scoring drought for the past few weeks, the Live Oak High girls soccer team broke through with a torrent of goals against Salinas on Wednesday.

The Acorn girls scored early and often en route to a 5-0 victory over the Cowboys.

“We’re out of the slump,” Live Oak coach Tony Vasquez said.

In its previous two games, first-place Live Oak (6-0-1 in league and 10-3-4 overall) had scored a total of one goal.

During that stretch, the Acorns edged North Salinas on a last-minute goal and ended up in a scoreless tie with Hollister-San Benito.

Vasquez said he started several reserves in an effort to shake up the lineup, a tactic he said worked as the Acorns led 3-0 at the half.

“I felt some of the girls were sluggish in the last game so I started the girls who don’t get as much playing time,” Vasquez said. “They’re hungry and it shows. We scored two goals right away and it gave us momentum.”

Junior Michelle McDonald scored a pair of goals for Live Oak, while Shawna McKeown, Janae Pimental and Catriona Adam each added a goal.

The Acorns play at Notre Dame today.
