Finishing off a difficult and disappointing season months after playing its final game, the Live Oak High football team celebrated its positive achieve-ments at its year-end team banquet on Wednesday.
To no one’s surprise, senior quarterback Steve Conner was named the team’s MVP.
Conner earned second-team all-league honors after being named first-team all-league as a receiver as a junior.
“He’s a phenomenal natural athlete who made the transition for the good of the team,” Coach Glen Webb said. “With-out him we would have really been in trouble.”
Live Oak finish-ed the season with a 0-9-1 record.
The coveted ACORN award, given to the player who best represents the team in terms of academics, citizenship, leadership and athletics, went to senior outside linebacker Matt Wahl.
Other award winners included: Most Inpirational, Brian Crane; Most Improved, John Redmond; Most Valuable Defen-sive Back, Miguel Ayala; Most Valuable Line-backer, Johnny Ramirez; Most Valuable Defen-sive Linemen, Antonio Samarron and Mike Gamez; Most Valuable Off-ensive Back, Daniel Salinas; Most Valuable Offensive Line-man, Dustin Vertin; Most Valu-able Receiver, Shaun Standridge; and the Coach’s Award, Zachary Frates.
Vertin (4.0 gpa) was named the team’s Scholar-Athlete.
