CUPERTINO — Following a 19-0 regular season, Live Oak senior Johann Abordo on Tuesday was eliminated from the CIF-Central Coast Section Badminton Championships.

The West Valley Division singles champion lost his opening match at Monta Vista High School to Capuchino’s Kenwart Tolledo, 15-4, 15-6, and his second to Evergreen Valley’s Tedman Zhuang 15-9, 15-5.

“It’s a whole new level of play at CCS,” Abordo’s coach Bharat Poria said Friday. “Most of these kids play year round.

“Johann was on top of his game, but in the end, when you’re playing someone far more skilled than you are, you have to just try and do your best. Johann showed a lot of spirit.”

Poria said he hopes Abordo continues to pursue badminton in college, possibly at UC Irvine, next year.

“He recognizes he has an opportunity to go far with the sport,” Poria said.

NOTE: Poria and Linda Seals will be hosting drop-in badminton from 6 p.m. to 9 Tuesdays through Aug. 18 beginning June 16 at Live Oak High School. The cost for non-Live Oak students is $2 per session.
